The Place

In front of the Parliament

Ġaħan is the traditional Maltese character of an ignorant boy. His most popular tale is the one in which the boy’s mother tells him to pull the door behind him and he literally detaches the door from its hinges and walks away, pulling the door behind him. Artist Gabriel Lia will install a door at the entrance to Valletta and dress up as Ġaħan, asking people to write on the door what ‘art’ is. When the door is full of words, the performer will carry it with him to Saint George Square, while interacting with passersby. The act will represent the fact that many people believe that art is ‘heavy’ but the open door shows us that art is open to everybody.
